Le Temps Pioneers Swiss Market with a One of a Kind Newspaper Digitization Project

Free worldwide access bound to attract new audiences

Denver, Colorado, April 13, 2009 Le Temps, the Swiss newspaper born in 1998 from the merger of three historical titles: Le Journal de Genève, la Gazette de Lausanne, and Le Nouveau Quotidien, selected Olive Software digitization and archival services to protect and ensure the long term preservation of its historically rich legacy.

Le Temps´ digitization project is the first full historical archive of a French language publically accessible newspaper in Switzerland. It is also unique as it represents a public partnership involving the Swiss National Library as well as the Geneva Library, and is supported, in part, by private fundraising.

“The aim of our digitization project is to give worldwide access to previously inaccessible content. The idea is to unlock our print heritage by providing unmatched search capabilities,” explained Virginie Fortun, Marketing Manager for Le Temps. “Our needs were unique. To satisfy the Swiss market, we wanted to provide the front end application in three different languages. We appreciate the fact that Olive made the redesign of the skin easily adaptable to our specific needs and expectations.”

Olive Software has digitized half a million pages, segmenting over 2 million articles in the first stage of the project. The initiative will grow to include an entire run of the publications dating back to 1798.

“We are proud to be affiliated with a preservation project of this historical magnitude and substance,” stated Dewayn Davis, President, Global Operations for Olive Software. “The collection will attract new audiences from around the world, including young readers and seasoned researchers. By offering them a fully text searchable replica of the print archive, Le Temps ensures both the longevity of its publication as well as its brand extension online.”

Olive provides preservation, digitization, and access solutions to educational institutions and leading libraries across the world, such as Princeton University, Washington Research Library Consortium, Kings College, University of Pennsylvania, Latvian National Library, and York University to name a few.
