East Valley Tribune Relies on Olive Software to Deliver Outstanding Newspapers in Education Program
Electronic Edition, Paired with Archive, Provides Powerful Resource with Broad Reach to over 60,000 students, locally and abroad
Santa Clara, California, October 10, 2007 – The
East Valley Tribune’s ambitious Newspapers in Education Program,
Tribune in Education, is sixteen-years-old, but experienced new life last
September with the launch of its e-edition. Exact electronic replicas
of the East Valley Tribune are now available to more than 190 Arizona
schools, reaching 8% of schools previously outside the delivery zone.
In addition to reaching more classrooms, the Olive powered e-edition saves
the Tribune delivery and newsprint costs for the program, and ensures
timely delivery regardless of the weather conditions, subscriber location,
or equipment malfunctions.
For example, Patricia Ramirez, first grade teacher in the Bureau of Indian
Affairs school, Cibecue Elementary, reports that because of the school’s
remote location, “Prior to having e-Trib, we would have another
brand’s newspaper delivered to a teacher’s house in a neighboring
town each morning. He would then load the paper on the school van, haul
it down to our town, unload it and put it in the hallway for teacher’s
to grab and use in the classroom. Whatever was left over each day was
left in the hallway scattered all over. Most people were taking it and
using it for their kindling during the winter to start their fires (homes
here have wood stoves for heat),” she said.
“Now, with the e-Trib, it’s so simple and convenient. No paper is being wasted, no one is inconvenienced, and students continue to have access to the newspaper for class assignments and is utilized at the elementary, junior high and high school levels by individual user IDs. We have literally had NO problems with e-Trib. In fact, a trainer was recently at our school giving a workshop and suggested some newspaper activities which relate to our reading/language arts curriculum. Then she quickly added ‘You don’t have access to the paper because you are so remote, right?’ We were able to quickly reply that we do, thanks to e-Trib,” added Ramirez.
Mrs. Ramirez concludes that, “e-Trib has been GREAT for our school both students and staff and best of all – there’s no cost to the school.” [TIE resources are 100% sponsored] Schools are always looking for resources that don’t cost us anything AND are still effective. It really has been the answer to our dilemma of making the newspaper available in Cibecue Schools.”
The East Valley Tribune provides schools at all levels free access to their e-editions and archives through Olive Software for exposure to a powerful research tool. The electronic editions employ an internet protocol address delivery that grants educators the right to use the Web-based newspaper during school hours. This arrangement protects home delivery subscriptions and prevents unauthorized access outside the educational facilities.
Through partnership with Rio Salado College (one of the Maricopa Community Colleges, fully-accredited and serving over 60,000 students annually), authorized educational access has been extended in remarkable new ways, explains Hazel Davis, Library Director at Rio Salado College. “The e-Trib is linked from our library website with our other online databases. Registered students can click on the link from any web-enabled computer from wherever they are, and get a username/password prompt to authenticate that they are registered students before they can view the paper. This way, our Distance Learning students are able to access the paper from our website at their convenience from home, work, or anywhere else that they have access to a computer, in a secure environment.”
“Although 87% of our Distance Learners reside locally in Maricopa County, we are an “Education Partner” with Go Army Ed, and as such, we provide classes for students who are serving in the military. They too can access our online databases from overseas, as long as they have Web access,” added Davis.
“We particularly value the fact that the format you provide allows us to view the paper exactly as it appears in the print edition, with all the graphics, color and special features. Our librarians consistently highlight the e-Trib as an exemplary resource in library instruction sessions for our students, including high school students participating in college level English 101 & English 102 through our Dual enrollment program,” said Davis.
In fact, the reason the East Valley Tribune originally selected Olive’s
ActivePaper e-edition in 2001 was because of its easy-to-use format and
browser access, and now reaps the benefits of the solution for its Newspapers
In Education program, said Yuval Rachmilevitz, president and CEO, Olive
Software. “Every school that signs up for it has access to the full
paper online, on every computer.”
e-Trib currently serves a total of 197 schools in seven school districts.
Moving forward, The East Valley Tribune is procuring a grant to digitize
depression-era newspapers from archival collections of the Tribune’s
historic moniker, the Mesa Daily Tribune, in order to create an enriched
education piece that will serve the research criteria established by local
school districts to meet newly adopted curriculum guidelines.
