Olive Software Helps Manatee High School Swim Into The Digital Age

Company Sponsors High School Journalism Contest, Provides Winner With Electronic Edition, Enhancing Web 2.0-style Collaboration

Santa Clara, California, June 7, 2007 – Olive Software – along with the Newspaper In Education program at the Bradenton Herald – today announced that Manatee High School has won the Bradenton Herald School Newspaper Competition. As a sponsor of the competition, Olive Software will provide the newspaper with a digital edition using its popular ActivePaper Daily. The contest recognizes outstanding journalism among high school students.

“Competitions such as these can help reinforce the important role newspapers play in our society and promote awareness of journalism careers among a new generation of students,” said Peter Spielvogel, Director of Product Marketing of Olive Software. “Olive is proud to continue our tradition of support for student journalists, as well as excellence in reporting and writing.”

Olive will use ActivePaper Daily, its digital publishing solution, to transform future issues of the Manatee High School paper into an easy-to-use online format. The paper will be available over the Web to anyone, anywhere, at any time through a standard Web browser. ActivePaper Daily preserves the complete newspaper, in its original print format, and enables users to search and access all components, including articles, photos, and ads.

“Young people – with their adoption of social networking, blogging, and bookmarking – have led the Web 2.0 revolution. A fully-searchable, online newspaper is a natural component to their digital lives,” continued Spielvogel. “Student journalists at Manatee High will now be able to use the web as a platform for participation and collaboration, sharing their work with friends and family, as well as their college applications.”

“Support for high school newspapers is essential both for aspiring journalists and to promote readership of newspapers among high school students. Students have so many options regarding where to put their energies and how to spend their time. It is critical to give support to high school newspaper programs,” says Brandy Braver, Newspaper In Education Coordinator at the Bradenton Herald.

Digital Editions Evolve Around The Globe

Papers such as the Irish Times, The Financial Times, The Denver Post, the Times of India, and The Scotsman rely on Olive Software to monetize their content, making it accessible to wide audiences ranging from corporate users to web readers to students.

“The newspaper industry is continually evolving – from moveable type to paste-up to computer layout to fully digital editions and digital archives,” said Spielvogel. “At Olive, we believe that the digital revolution presents unique opportunities to reach young readers, and our work with the winners of the Bradenton Herald competition underscores this point.”
