The Kansas City Star Selects Olive Software to Provide Platform for E-Edition
Daily Electronic Edition Delivers Improved User Experience and Keeps Time-Crunched Readers Abreast of Local News and Information
Santa Clara, California, MAY 15, 2007 – Point, Click &

The Kansas City Star, a McClatchy (NYSE: MNI) daily newspaper,
has chosen Olive Software, Inc. to deliver its enhanced daily electronic
edition. The Star’s new electronic edition, e-Star, uses Olive’s
ActivePaper Daily, a web-based and easy–to-navigate solution that
preserves the paper’s original layout. The fast-loading format makes
viewing The Star on the web as easy as reading the paper in print.
To introduce E-Star to users everywhere, The Star is offering free two-week subscriptions. To take advantage of this limited time offer go to www.kansascity.com and click on E-Star at the top left-hand portion of the page.
“Our e-Star edition meets the needs of customers who want a portable, electronic platform for reading today’s paper while maintaining the familiar design and organization of the printed product,” said Chris Christian, vice president of circulation for The Star.
Olive’s ActivePaper Daily provides additional functionality that PDF electronic editions cannot match. Readers can access a publication anywhere, anytime—with just a web browser—and without additional client software. In addition, the XML-based format means publishers can easily transform content into an electronic edition and allow web users to read a publication the exact way it appeared in print, as well as search the full text of every article.
“ActivePaper Daily allows papers to attract a variety of users
– from snowbirds who want to stay on-top of hometown news to younger
readers who spend more time online, said Yuval Rachmilevitz, president
and CEO of Olive Software. “With the acquisition of e-edition users,
papers gain ABC audited subscribers and expand their market and audience
reach.”
Rachmilevitz continued, “The enhanced electronic edition of The
Kansas City Star is a benefit to both readers and the newspaper
itself. Our software lets newspapers offer a new level of service to their
loyal readers and gives subscribers access to both an electronic edition
and the previous seven days of archives.”
“We strive to maintain the special bond we have developed with our subscribers, and Olive’s sound e-publishing solution will help us reach even more readers. With Olive’s tools, we can deliver news to a segment of the population that is comfortable and used to reading information online and we can deliver it in a format that is intuitive and easy to use. In addition, readers that might not take a daily paper because they don’t want stacks of newsprint piling up, will have access to current news in a format that provides a remarkably similar experience to print with the added benefits of interactivity,” said Christian.
The Kansas City Star is the latest newspaper to use Olive’s
ActivePaper Daily to address new business drivers and a new breed of readership.
Other publications include The Daily Oklahoman, The Denver
Post, The Orange County Register, Lake Charles American
Press, and Lakeway Publishers.
