Press Release
20 June 2004
DENVER, Colorado, June 20, 2004 – Olive Software, Inc., innovator of advanced electronic publishing solutions for newspaper and magazine XML-based enterprise content management, has partnered with Knight Ridder Digital (KRD) to deliver Civil War-era electronic editions for The Philadelphia Inquirer in a special archive collection.
Founded June 1, 1829, The Philadelphia Inquirer is America's third-oldest surviving daily newspaper. In addition to coverage of the Gettysburg Address, the newspaper's wartime reporting included eye-witness accounts from the battlefields. Microfilm from 1860 through 1865 was digitized with Olive Software's PipeX microfilm digitization system, so readers can view, search, and print historic articles, photos and full-pages, just as they were published 144 years ago. The agreement provides the opportunity for Knight Ridder Digital to monetize Knight Ridder's historical archives.
Designed specifically for newspapers, Olive's ActivePaper Archive® software, in combination with its PipeX digitization process preserves all elements of the newspaper in one XML repository, delivering a commerce-ready system for historic archive sales just as the pages appeared in print. The software, utilizing a sophisticated XML tagging structure, ensures data portability and long-term preservation. The project also provides a centralized in-house research tool for on-the-fly searches at the article, picture, page, or ad level.
The ActivePaper Archive software requires no downloads or software installations
- users can search, browse or read the editions of the papers right in their
standard browser with a click of the mouse.
"The ability to efficiently search and read Philadelphia Inquirer Civil
War articles and images between 1860 and 1865 will be an indispensable tool
for researchers, genealogists, historians, educators and hobbyists," said
Shaun Dail, Executive Vice President for Olive Software.
Explained Dail, "Olive's ActivePaper Archive builds an index of every article,
photograph, drawing and page of a microfilmed newspaper, converting content
into a robust, browser-based, user-friendly format. Because our technology significantly
reduces the time and cost of digitizing archives, preservation with easy access
to valuable historic resources is now possible. By linking current events to
related historical articles, publishers can realize new revenue streams with
existing content."
"This new Civil War archive rockets us beyond the days of cranking microfilm
in the library," said Ken Doctor, vice-president for content services at
Knight Ridder Digital. "We believe that this is first of several projects
to bring the past alive for readers and researchers. Our partnership with Olive
gives us a customer-friendly product that we believe will be a hit in the marketplace."
In conjunction with the online archives, The Philadelphia Inquirer will publish
a hardcover book entitled "Eyewitness Reports: The Inquirer's Live Coverage
of the American Civil War", by Ed Colimore. The book features the digitized
articles from the Civil War period.
