We all knew it was coming but Adobe has officially announced that it is ending support for Flash. To boot, they have roped in “several of our technology partners – including Apple, Facebook, Google, Microsoft and Mozilla” (meaning all the major browser providers) who have agreed to deprecate their support with similar timing.
Now, don’t panic… they aren’t pulling the plug until the end of 2020, but that is only 3 years away.
As many of you know, with our transition to the AWS cloud, Olive Software “end-of-lifed” all of the products in our portfolio which leveraged the Flash platform in favor of open technologies such as HTML 5 and XML… so in this transition your Olive products should not be impacted in any way.
The same can not be said for other platforms and, many publishers still leverage the format for it’s high fidelity, ease of use and rich media capabilities… particularly for advertising and some infographics. And that’s not to mention all the video platforms who hopefully will now be moving briskly to re-encode decades of video or will be lost to the obsolescence monster.
So while it’s not the next great financial crisis or a meteor impact… it’s good to be prepared.
